The process transforms waste into beautiful, illuminated pieces, highlighting the potential of textile reuse and inspiring sustainable design practices in the lighting industry.
In response to growing textile waste, my project explores repurposing discarded fabrics into functional art. By shredding selected fabric waste into its fibers and using traditional paper-making techniques, the sheetlike outcome reveals multiple techniques for the further formgiving of the lamps.
Research has been made within combinations of:
- sewing
- molding
- laser cutting
- jeans- and cotton fabric
THE COLLECTION
PRODUCTION PROCESS
The separation of the cotton fabric into its fibres is done by shredding and further on in the hollander beater.
Adopting the handmade paper making process, the fabric fibres create a paper sheet-like outcome.
Besides the reusable use of water, no further substances are reused during the recycling process.
Hands on research with recycled jeans fabric leads
to discovering methods of formgiving. However the jeans fibres show a lack of stability.
